Stinky Ears! Does Your Dog Have an Ear Infection?

dog ear infectionDoes your dog have really stinky ears or yucky stuff coming out of their ears? If so, then he might have an ear infection. Thankfully most ear infections can be prevented with basic hygiene. Keeping your dogs ears free of wax buildup, trimming their ear hair, drying their ears if they get wet, will all reduce the change of an ear infection. Other things like ear mites, allergies and hypothyroidism can also contribute to ear infections, but can be treated with proper medical supervision.

Symptoms of an Ear Infection in Your Dog

  • Shaking their head
  • Tilting their head
  • Ear odor
  • Loss of balance
  • Redness of the ear canal
  • Swelling of the outer (visible) portion of the ear
  • Brown, yellow or red (bloody) discharge

If your dog is showing signs of an ear infection, call your local Albuquerque veterinary clinic at once. Most of the time an ear infection can be treated with simple drops. In rare cases a surgery may be needed.
